Akuer has witnessed hardship. She left her country torn apart by war to create a better, safer life for her and her family. Once in Calgary, Akuer’s marriage dissolved, leaving her alone to raise five young children. She felt overwhelmed and did not have the provisions for a home. Then a neighbour told her about WINS.
Through the WINS Free Goods Referral program, she received beds and other basic household necessities. With home under control, she turned her attention to what she needed to do to provide for her family.
At WINS Family Resource Center, Akuer gained the tools to access community resources like the Food Bank. The Center also helped Akuer with filling out government forms such as the Child Tax Credit application."When I don't understand something, I can always come here for help .” she says.
Akuer is also learning new skills. The Drop- In program has allowed her to practise English and this has really helped her she says. "I feel confident.”
